Translational Glycomics Center located at Versiti’s Blood Research Institute in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
The Versiti Translational Glycomics Center (VTGC), part of the Versiti Blood Research Institute (VBRI) is expanding an already robust glycomics environment that offers a strong cadre of basic and clinician scientists invested in metabolomics, glycobiology, and transcriptome-glycome networks with a focus on hematopoiesis. This rich and highly collaborative environment enhances institutional and national research programs and provides expertise for the training of clinical and basic science fellows.
The VTGC is located adjacent to the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center campus which houses the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), the Cancer Center, the Center for Biomedical Mass Spectrometry Research, the Shared Mass Spectrometry Facility for Small Molecule analysis, the Center for Imaging Research and the Genomic Sciences and Precision Medicine Center. The proximity of the BRI to these institutions' basic and clinical research programs promotes a productive and collaborative environment. The VTGC, VBRI, and MCW is a welcoming campus community with a strong culture of collaboration, partnership, and engagement with our surrounding community.
Available Positions
We seek a highly self-motivated post-doctoral candidates to join a dynamic and transformative group at Versiti Translational Glycomics Center (VTGC) and Blood Research Institute (VBRI), Versiti (https://www.versiti.org/research/blood-research-institute). The Postdoctoral Fellow position in an NIH-funded lab at the Blood Research Institute (BRI), Versiti (https://www.translationalglycomics.com/). The position offers a competitive salary and excellent training environment for career development.
The Centers and Hoffmeister lab’s primary focus are understanding mechanosensing via carbohydrate - extracellular matrix interactions to modulate hematopoietic stem cell function in hematologic diseases, including myeloproliferative neoplasms. We study the role of posttranslational modifications in the structure and function of receptor transmembrane signaling, particularly mucins, in blood cell function and production. We use a combination of biochemistry, cell biology, molecular and carbohydrate biology at a single-cell and bulk level. Current studies focus on 1) the structural regulation of cell surface receptors by sialic acids in hematopoietic stem cells, megakaryocytes, and platelets to improve thrombopoiesis and 2) establishing transcriptome and carbohydrate networks to predict disease development progression of myeloproliferative neoplasms.
Who are we looking for?
Eligible candidates will have an MD, Ph.D., MD/Ph.D., or equivalent degree. The level of the position will be commensurate with achievement, experience, and training. Qualified applicants must have strong knowledge and research experience in hematopoiesis, cell biology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. Knowledge of carbohydrates is preferred.
Successful candidates will have track records of creativity and productivity, a desire to integrate into our exciting, collaborative, and growing community of researchers at the VTGC and VBRI, and a dedication to contributing to our diversity and openness values. Applicants must be able to work independently and have excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Candidates will mount an effective and innovative research education and projects, including becoming a K12 training program scholar. The program includes an individualized training plan (IDP), learning skills to obtain outside funding, and participating actively in graduate and post-graduate teaching and training.
VBRI is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty and strongly encourages applications from individuals in groups that are underrepresented in the biomedical sciences. VBRI is an affirmative action / equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate in hiring or employment based on age, sex, race, color, religion, national origin, veteran status, disability, or sexual orientation.
